Born in Madras, Oregon, Jacoby Ellsbury began playing baseball as a child, and also showed promise as a football and basketball player. He ultimately settled on baseball, and by the end of his first season with the Lowell Spinners in 2005, he had caught the eye of multiple baseball enthusiasts due to his speed and intelligence. His ability to steal bases was especially excellent, and throughout his career he has set or broken multiple stolen base records. After playing in the minor leagues for three seasons, he began his professional career with the Boston Red Sox in 2007. He broke the Red Sox 100 year old record for the most bases stolen by a rookie (32) in 2008, and the record for the most number of stolen bases by a Red Sox player in a single season in 2009.
