Born in New York, New York, Jack Nicholson, also known as John Joseph Nicholson, began his professional career working in animation at MGM. He decided not to pursue a career in cartoons, even though he showed great talent, because he wanted to focus on acting. He made his debut in the teen drama, “The Cry Baby Killer” in the late 50s, and then spent the next ten years appearing in low-budget projects, and working primarily as a writer or director. In 1969, he took over a role written for Rip Torn in the film “Easy Rider”, and it would serve as his breakout performance, earning him an Oscar nomination. This began a string of Oscar, Golden Globe, and BAFTA-nominated performances in such films as, “Five Easy Pieces”, “Chinatown”, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, “Terms of Endearment”, “Ironweed”, “A Few Good Men”, “As Good as It Gets”, “About Schmidt”, and “The Departed”. He has won three Oscars, four BAFTA Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards, and has received 36 nominations from the three awards committees over the course of his career.
